Estonian Keyboard Online

The layout at a glance

This Estonian virtual keyboard mirrors the QWERTY layout of a physical Estonian keyboard. Its 48 character keys reach the 32 letters of the Latin script (U+0041–U+005A, U+0061–U+007A, U+00C0–U+024F) straight from the browser, with no software to install and no system setting to change.

The layout reaches 13 characters that an ordinary Latin keyboard does not carry: £ ¤ § ´ ½ ä õ ö ü š ž ˇ €.

15 further characters come from the AltGr key (Alt on mobile): @ £ $ € { [ ] } \ § š ^ ½ | ž.

How to type in Estonian

  1. Click the on-screen keys or type on your physical keyboard — both write into the same text area.
  2. Shift shows the second layer of every key: capitals and the characters printed at the top right.
  3. AltGr (Alt on mobile) shows the third layer, the characters printed at the bottom right.
  4. The Copy button puts the whole text on the clipboard, ready to paste into an email, a document or a form.
  5. The Google, YouTube and ChatGPT buttons run a search with the text you typed, without retyping it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I type õ, ä, ö and ü?

They have their own keys: ü and õ to the right of P, ö and ä to the right of L. Shift gives the capitals.

How do I type š and ž?

Press Alt Gr + S for š and Alt Gr + Z for ž. They appear mostly in loanwords and foreign names.

Is the Estonian keyboard QWERTY or QWERTZ?

QWERTY. It follows the Nordic ISO pattern, with an extra key next to the left Shift key (< > |).

Where are @, € and the brackets?

On the Alt Gr layer: Alt Gr + 2 gives @, Alt Gr + E or 5 gives €, and Alt Gr + 7, 8, 9, 0 give { [ ] }.

What sound is õ?

õ is a vowel typical of Estonian, pronounced with the tongue pulled back and the lips unrounded. It has its own place in the alphabet, after w.

Is the Estonian keyboard like the Finnish one?

Very close: Estonian and Finnish are related languages and their layouts share ä and ö. Estonian adds õ and ü, and puts š and ž on Alt Gr.
