The layout at a glance

This Kazakh virtual keyboard mirrors the ЙЦУКЕН layout of a physical Kazakh keyboard. Its 47 character keys reach the 42 letters of the Cyrillic script (U+0400–U+052F) straight from the browser, with no software to install and no system setting to change.

The layout reaches 43 characters that an ordinary Latin keyboard does not carry: а б в г д е ж з и й к л м н о п р с т у ф х ц ч ш щ ъ ы ь э ю я ё і ғ қ ң ү ұ һ.

13 further characters come from the AltGr key (Alt on mobile): 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 - = ё.

Transliteration mode lets you write Kazakh from a Latin keyboard: you type the sounds and the text is converted as you go.

How to type in Kazakh

  1. Click the on-screen keys or type on your physical keyboard — both write into the same text area.
  2. Shift shows the second layer of every key: capitals and the characters printed at the top right.
  3. AltGr (Alt on mobile) shows the third layer, the characters printed at the bottom right.
  4. The Copy button puts the whole text on the clipboard, ready to paste into an email, a document or a form.
  5. The Google, YouTube and ChatGPT buttons run a search with the text you typed, without retyping it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I type the Kazakh letters ә, ғ, қ, ң, ө, ұ, ү, һ and і?

They are on the number row, from key 2 to the key just left of Backspace. Shift gives the capitals.

How do I type digits?

The number row carries letters, so press Alt Gr + the key to get 1 to 0.

Is this the Latin or the Cyrillic Kazakh alphabet?

Cyrillic, which is still the most widely used script in Kazakhstan while the country gradually moves to a Latin alphabet.

How is it different from the Russian keyboard?

The letter rows are the same ЙЦУКЕН layout; only the number row changes, to make room for the nine Kazakh letters.

What do ә, ө, ү and ұ represent?

They are vowels that follow Kazakh vowel harmony: ә, ө and ү are front vowels, ұ is the back u. Words generally keep all front or all back vowels.

Can I type Russian with the Kazakh keyboard?

Yes. All Russian letters are present, and ё is on Alt Gr + е.
