Latvian Keyboard Online

The layout at a glance

This Latvian virtual keyboard mirrors the QWERTY layout of a physical Latvian keyboard. Its 47 character keys reach the 39 letters of the Latin script (U+0041–U+005A, U+0061–U+007A, U+00C0–U+024F) straight from the browser, with no software to install and no system setting to change.

The layout reaches 15 characters that an ordinary Latin keyboard does not carry: ā č ē ģ ī ķ ļ ņ ō ŗ š ū ž – €.

15 further characters come from the AltGr key (Alt on mobile): € – ē ŗ ū ī ō ā š ģ ķ ļ ž č ņ.

How to type in Latvian

  1. Click the on-screen keys or type on your physical keyboard — both write into the same text area.
  2. Shift shows the second layer of every key: capitals and the characters printed at the top right.
  3. AltGr (Alt on mobile) shows the third layer, the characters printed at the bottom right.
  4. The Copy button puts the whole text on the clipboard, ready to paste into an email, a document or a form.
  5. The Google, YouTube and ChatGPT buttons run a search with the text you typed, without retyping it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I type Latvian long vowels (ā, ē, ī, ū)?

Press Alt Gr and the base letter: Alt Gr + A gives ā, + E gives ē, + I gives ī, + U gives ū. Add Shift for capitals.

How do I type ģ, ķ, ļ, ņ and č, š, ž?

Same method: Alt Gr + G, K, L or N for the letters with a cedilla, and Alt Gr + C, S or Z for the letters with a caron.

Why does the Latvian keyboard look like an English one?

The widely used "Latvian (QWERTY)" layout keeps the US key positions and puts the 11 Latvian diacritic letters on the Alt Gr layer, so nothing moves for QWERTY users.

What are ō and ŗ for?

They belong to the pre-1946 Latvian spelling and to Latgalian. Modern standard Latvian does not use them, but the layout keeps them for older texts.

How many letters does the Latvian alphabet have?

33. It has no q, w, x or y, and 11 of its letters carry a diacritic.

Why do Latvian macrons matter?

They mark long vowels, and length changes meaning: "kazas" means goats, while "kāzas" means wedding.
