Icelandic Keyboard Online

The layout at a glance

This Icelandic virtual keyboard mirrors the QWERTY layout of a physical Icelandic keyboard. Its 48 character keys reach the 36 letters of the Latin script (U+0041–U+005A, U+0061–U+007A, U+00C0–U+024F) straight from the browser, with no software to install and no system setting to change.

The layout reaches 15 characters that an ordinary Latin keyboard does not carry: ¨ ° ´ µ á æ é í ð ó ö ú ý þ €.

18 further characters come from the AltGr key (Alt on mobile): € { [ ] } \ @ é ý ú í ó ~ á ^ ` | µ.

How to type in Icelandic

  1. Click the on-screen keys or type on your physical keyboard — both write into the same text area.
  2. Shift shows the second layer of every key: capitals and the characters printed at the top right.
  3. AltGr (Alt on mobile) shows the third layer, the characters printed at the bottom right.
  4. The Copy button puts the whole text on the clipboard, ready to paste into an email, a document or a form.
  5. The Google, YouTube and ChatGPT buttons run a search with the text you typed, without retyping it.

Each row is one physical key: the base character, the one produced with Shift, then the one produced with AltGr.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I type ð, þ and æ?

Each one has its own key: ð to the right of P, æ to the right of L, and þ at the end of the bottom row, where / is on an English keyboard.

How do I type á, é, í, ó, ú and ý?

Press Alt Gr and the vowel: A, E, I, O, U or Y. Add Shift for capitals. On a physical Icelandic keyboard you would press the ´ dead key before the vowel.

Where is ö?

ö has its own key on the number row, between 0 and the hyphen.

Is the Icelandic layout close to the Danish or Norwegian one?

Yes. It follows the same Nordic ISO pattern but replaces the Danish and Norwegian letters with ð, æ, ö and þ.

What are ð and þ?

Eth (ð) is the voiced th of "this", thorn (þ) the voiceless th of "thing". þ only appears at the start of words, ð only inside or at the end.

How many letters does the Icelandic alphabet have?

32. Native words do not use c, q, w or z, while á, ð, é, í, ó, ú, ý, þ, æ and ö are full letters.
