Esperanto Keyboard Online

The layout at a glance

This Esperanto virtual keyboard mirrors the QWERTY layout of a physical Esperanto keyboard. Its 47 character keys reach the 32 letters of the Latin script (U+0041–U+005A, U+0061–U+007A, U+00C0–U+024F) straight from the browser, with no software to install and no system setting to change.

The layout reaches 7 characters that an ordinary Latin keyboard does not carry: ĉ ĝ ĥ ĵ ŝ ŭ €.

7 further characters come from the AltGr key (Alt on mobile): € ŭ ŝ ĝ ĥ ĵ ĉ.

How to type in Esperanto

  1. Click the on-screen keys or type on your physical keyboard — both write into the same text area.
  2. Shift shows the second layer of every key: capitals and the characters printed at the top right.
  3. AltGr (Alt on mobile) shows the third layer, the characters printed at the bottom right.
  4. The Copy button puts the whole text on the clipboard, ready to paste into an email, a document or a form.
  5. The Google, YouTube and ChatGPT buttons run a search with the text you typed, without retyping it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I type ĉ, ĝ, ĥ, ĵ, ŝ and ŭ?

Press Alt Gr and the base letter: C, G, H, J, S or U. Add Shift for capitals.

What is the x-system?

Without special keys, Esperanto writers often add an x after the letter (cx, gx, sx…). This keyboard types the real letters instead.

Does the layout change the other letters?

No, it is an English QWERTY; only the Alt Gr layer is added.

Can I copy the text into other programs?

Yes. The letters are standard Unicode, so they paste correctly into email, documents and social networks.

How many letters does the Esperanto alphabet have?

28. It has no q, w, x or y, and adds ĉ, ĝ, ĥ, ĵ, ŝ and ŭ.

What is the h-system?

An older substitute that writes ch, gh, hh, jh, sh and u for ĉ, ĝ, ĥ, ĵ, ŝ and ŭ. The real letters are preferred today.
